Distance Slab, Old Kilpatrick

A sandstone distance slab erected by the 20th Legion, found near Old Kilpatrick Fort before 1684. The inscription reads: “For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, father of his country, a detachment of the 20th Valiant and Victorious Legion completed [this work] over a distance of 4411 feet”. Three legions built the Wall, and erected these stones to record the completion of their individual stretches. This one shows the reclining figure of the goddess Victory with her elbow resting on a globe. At the bottom of the stone is a boar, the emblem of the Twentieth Legion.
