Cleddans: Kleinkastell

On high ground to the west of Cleddans Farmhouse (West Dunbartonshire) is the site of a Roman fortlet on the Antonine Wall.

The site is not publicly accessible and no remains are visible on the ground today. The site was discovered in 1980. No Roman remains had ever been reported there, but the site was chosen for excavation because it is approximately half way between Castlehill and Duntocher forts, and is the only location which provides a clear view of both forts.

Finding the fortlet at Cleddans supports the theory that the Antonine Wall was originally built with fortlets at approximately every Roman mile. The site of Cleddans fortlet lies on open ground to the south of the A810 between Duntocher and Bearsden.
