Willkommen auf der Webseite des Antoninus-Wall - Weltkulturerbe der UNESCODer Antoninus-Wall wurde um das Jahr 140 n. Chr. auf Befehl des Kaisers Antoninus Pius errichtet. Für die Dauer von etwa 20 Jahren bildete er die nordwestliche Grenze des Römischen Reiches. Der 60 km lange Wall erstreckt sich vom heutigen Old Kilpatrick auf der Nordseite des Flusses Clyde bis nach Bo’ness am Firth of Forth. In 2008 wurde der Antoninus-Wall als Weltkulturerbe von der UNESCO anerkannt und ist damit Bestandteil der 'Grenzanlagen des Römischen Reichs' zu denen auch die Weltkulturerbestätten Hadrians-Wall in England und der deutsche Limes gehären. |
Antonine Wall Gains World Heritage Site Status
Once the Roman Empire's most northern frontier in Britain, the Antonine Wall was inscribed by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee at its meeting in Canada in July 2008 as the UK's newest World Heritage Site
The Scottish bid is part of a joint international effort (incorporating sites in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary) to nominate the Antonine Wall as an extension of the trans-national Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site which includes Hadrian's Wall and the Upper Raetian German Limes.

Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Antonine Wall) World Heritage Site Draft Supplementary Planning Guidance
West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and Falkirk Councils, along with Historic Scotland, have together prepared draft Supplementary Planning Guidance for the Antonine Wall. The purpose of the guidance is to explain the significance of the Antonine Wall and its status as a World Heritage Site; encourage early and effective consultation with Councils and Historic Scotland; and to outline the approach and procedure for assessing development affecting the wall and its setting.
The Councils are now consulting on the guidance and its accompanying Environmental Report. Both documents can be downloaded by following the link above to this full news item.

New Antonine Wall Co-ordinator appointed!
Patricia Weeks has been appointed on secondment from Historic Scotland as the new Antonine Wall World Heritage Site Co-ordinator. Patricia will take up her new duties from January 2011.

Drumchapel Pupils on the Antonine Junior Health March
On Friday the 29th August over 300 P6 and P7 pupils from 6 Primary schools in Drumchapel, Glasgow undertook the "Antonine Junior Health Walk" on a route around Drumchapel, taking in the Antonine Wall. The Antonine Junior Health Walk was organised by Drumchapel Heritage Group, Drumchapel L.I.F.E (Life Is For Everyone) the healthy living initiative, and Drumchapel Environment Trust, with support from a wide range of partners listed at the end of this article.
