Kirkintilloch
Distance slab of the 6th Legion, Eastermains, Kirkintilloch
A sandstone distance slab of the 6th Legion, found around 1740 at Eastermains, Kirkintilloch. The designs on either side of the inscription are 'peltae' whose horns terminate in griffin heads. The inscription reads: "For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aurelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, Father of his Country, the Sixth Victorious, Loyal and Faithful Legion completed (the Wall) over a distance of ....thousand paces". Unfourtunately the inscription is incomplete as the actual distance is not recorded. The slab is 159 cm long by 77 cm high by 15 cm thick.
