Access to the Antonine Wall

With the new World Heritage status for the wall in place, the Antonine Wall
Management Group are keen to explore ways in which local communities can gain
more from their association with the wall – in all sorts of ways – socially,
economically, culturally and environmentally.

A huge amount has been achieved by local people working together over recent
years – the Antonine Walkway Trust and other paths and trails, the idea for the
Kelvin Valley Park, local Nature Reserves, the Local History Centre in Croy and the
heritage groups in Kilsyth, Twechar Action and the Healthy Living and Enterprise
Centre, the Friends of Burn Green. The area is changing fast and local people have
been driving this change with support from their agency partners.

Over the coming years, the World Heritage status will add another dimension to this.
A pilot programme has been set up to work with the communities of Croy, Twechar,
Kilsyth and the villages. The work is being funded in part by the Kelvin Vally LEADER
programme.

Two Community Events have been arranged to provide an opportunity for local
residents and organisations to come together and share stories, hopes and ambitions
about what’s happening locally and to help build up a shared vision for the future.

The workshops will be held in Twechar at the Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre
between 7pm and 9pm on Monday 23rd November and in Kilsyth at the Burn Green
Community Centre between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday 26th November.

The Community Events will give us a chance to create a shared picture of projects
and ideas for the future and stories from past years and to identify problems and
barriers affecting everyday access to and understanding about the heart of the
Antonine Wall running through our area.

Next year during March we plan to hold a third Community Event to celebrate what
we have achieved in mapping the Wall and its place in our local story.
