Falkirk Distance Stone Commission

An artist is sought to research, design and produce a sandstone sculpture in the style of the original distance stones found along the line of the Antonine Wall. 

West Dunbartonshire Council, on behalf of the Antonine Wall Management Plan Partners (and as part of a wider National Lottery Heritage Fund project) wish to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced artist to design and produce a Roman themed stone sculpture for incorporation into a landscaping scheme at Cow Wynd, Falkirk. 

The Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project is a National Lottery Heritage Fund project which aims to better connect local communities with their heritage and to create better connections for visitors along the length of the Antonine Wall, the Roman Empire’s most northerly frontier.  The project is managed by a Steering Group of five local authorities (West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and Falkirk Councils) and Historic Environment Scotland.  Further information on the site and its history can be found on the website: www.antoninewall.org

Research uncovered that there was no available distance stone that had been found to replicate for the Falkirk site, with the closest find, the Bridgeness Slab, having already been replicated.  The decision was taken instead to create a new, modern interpretation to the distance stones for the site at Falkirk. 

This commission is to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced artist to design and produce the fifth distance stone for incorporation into a landscaping scheme designed by LUC.  

Scope of Works:

An artist is sought to research, design and produce a sandstone sculpture in the style of the original distance stones found along the line of the Antonine Wall.  This commission should include the following:

Design work for a modern interpretation of a distance stone to include key features common to the original distance stones found along the line of the Antonine Wall.  The design should include reference to the local Iron Age population and include abbreviated Latin text to be provided by the client.   The design will be subject to approval and sign off by the client and project board;

Production of the sandstone distance stone using a locally sourced buff sandstone to the agreed dimensions ;

Delivery to site (see Appendix 2) of final distance stone.  

Budget

The total budget available for this commission is £5,000 exclusive of VAT.
