Campa Cnoc Tom a’ Phùir: campa sealach

Between Falkirk town centre and the Falkirk Wheel is the site of a Roman temporary camp.

The camp is sometimes visible in aerial photographs, but cannot be seen on the ground today. The Tamfourhill camp was first identified as crop marks in aerial photographs and analysis of this photography reveals that the entrances to the camp were defended by a staggered section of banks and ditches. It is likely that the camp was used to house legionary soldiers as they carried out the work of building the Wall.

The site of the camp lies between Falkirk town centre and the Falkirk Wheel, to the south of Watling Lodge, in an open field between the Union Canal and Tamfourhill Wood.
