Gravestone of Verecunda
Gravestone of Verecunda . The stone is carved from gritstone and is 91cm x 54cm x 15cm.It is inscribed 'D M VERECVNDAE' which translates as "To the spirits of the departed [and] of Verecunda". It was found reused in an earthhouse to the east of Shirva House, Shirva Farm, Kirkintilloch, Scotland. The stone was found in 1729 approximately 1.5km west of Bar Hill Roman Fort, and is believed to date to the Roman occupation of the fort from AD 142-180.
