Tombstones

Tombstones provide an insight into the people who lived along the wall.

At Shirva, a group of tombstones were found belonging to both soldiers and civilians. They may have come from a cemetery attached to Auchendavy fort.

They include a stone to: Flavius Lucianus, a soldier of the Second Legion; Salamanes, a boy of 15; and a woman called Verecunda. The group also includes two monumental relief sculptures, possibly from a mausoleum of a high ranking official, which are extremely rare from a frontier region.
