History
Overlooking the River Clyde, the fort was built before the wall builders reached the area. It may have been constructed atop the remains of an earlier fort dating to Roman conquests in Scotland in the AD 80’s. The fort may have been constructed to serve a harbour, acting as a supply base for goods brought in by sea.

What can I see today?
No traces of the fort are visible today, but the site of Old Kilpatrick fort is worth visiting for the magnificent views across the Clyde. This is a viewpoint that places the modern visitor at the north-west corner of the former Roman Empire.
Located next to the Forth-Clyde canal on Portpatrick Road, you can see a reconstruction of a distance slab found near the fort.
