History

The fort was largely located on the east slope of Castlehill. The site is easy to locate because of a distinctive circular enclosed tree plantation that occupies almost half of the fort within its north-west corner.

The site has not been excavated, but non-destructive methods has identified key elements of the fort. This includes gates, defences and some interior structures.

What can I see today?

No remains are visible on the ground today, but the site offers some of the best landscape views along the line of the Antonine Wall.

What was found there?

Two distance slabs have been found here: one was built into a cottage at Castlehill around 1698 and the other was ploughed up in 1847. They show that two legions were involved in the construction of the wall near Castlehill, the Twentieth Legion and the Sixth Legion.

These artefacts can now be seen in the Hunterian Museum.
